The True Meaning of Discipleship

With the beginning of summer, All Faiths Seminary has ordained additional Interfaith Ministers to go forth into the world to become disciples in their faith and spread the Word of God through their discipleship.

What does that mean? Well, according to the “Merriam-Webster Dictionary,” the true meaning of Discipleship is one who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of their faith to another. If you don’t already know this, discipleship is a process. … Indeed, discipleship of any religion involves surrendering all your feelings, and thoughts to the God’s Will. In effect, we are sharing with people of all races and ethnic groups the good news of God’s Grace and Love.

As an example from a Christian perspective, in an article written by Thomas A Tarrants III, D. Min., Thomas says, “First, each of us must begin by earnestly seeking God’s Gto be a more faithful disciple of Jesus. Second, we must seek ways to help our own church become a community of disciples seeking to fulfill the Great Commission in the power of the Holy Spirit. Third, we must endeavor to live publicly for Christ and seek to be salt and light in the world…” (Excerpted from The C.S. Lewis Institute, from the Spring 2011 issue of “Knowing and Doing”)

Another important thing to understand about discipleship is that it’s not forced. It is best fostered through organic conversations among others where we as disciples gather and live out our faith. By demonstrating the transforming Love of God, sharing all things in common and taking care of one another, we begin to form a united community, where we are encouraged, strengthened and challenged. By applying these disciple-making tactics to our lives, we can better spread these teachings to all the nations of the world.

Jesus said, “Go forth and teach ye all nations…” (Matthew 28:19)

All Faiths Seminary International teaches and commissions all of us to do the same.
